Early years

At our British kindergarten in Almería, our youngest learners aged 3 to 5 thrive in a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment where curiosity leads the way. Through English immersion from day one and the British EYFS curriculum, children explore, discover, grow and become happy, independent lifelong learners.

Our curriculum

In Early Childhood at The British School of Almería, children explore and nurture their curiosity from the very start.   Through full immersion in English and a child-led, inquiry-based British curriculum, they develop interpersonal and physical skills while building the foundations for lifelong success.

Literacy

Ignite a love of reading and writing

Students take their first steps in reading and writing through phonics, stories and hands-on activities. They develop letter recognition, begin to write their own name and build vocabulary, while strengthening auditory discrimination, listening and recall skills. Students also learn to identify and remember characters in stories and anticipate rhymes or next steps in familiar tales.

Literacy

Mathematics

Build problem-solving skills

Students learn basic numbers, count to ten, compare quantities and explore shapes and space. They work with 2D shapes and mathematical vocabulary, helping them understand and use language linked to early numeracy with confidence.

Mathematics

Communication and Language

Develop confident communication skills

Students begin to articulate words clearly and express their feelings, wants and needs in English and Spanish. They develop listening skills, answer questions, follow simple instructions and take part in conversations with growing confidence.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Grow in confidence and empathy

Students build a sense of identity, develop independence and form positive relationships with their peers. Through daily routines, outdoor activities and guided experiences, they adapt to new situations, understand simple instructions and learn appropriate ways to act and interact.

Physical Development

Move, play and express themselves

Students develop control, coordination and confidence in movement as they move safely around the school environment. They strengthen fine and gross motor skills through activities such as balancing, using their hands, cutting with scissors, painting with a brush, fitting pieces together and beginning to control a pencil with precision.

Physical Development

Understanding the World

Explore communities and environments

Students begin to understand the world they live in, as well as the culture and community around them, through a wide range of activities and experiences. They also learn from family-led workshops, discovering the important role each person plays in society.

Artistic Expression and Design

Express creativity through the arts

Children express themselves creatively using different materials, music, movement and play. They explore dancing and singing in different languages, while themed classroom areas encourage theatre, role play and connections with real-life experiences.
