Elena Maccioni is Head of KS4 and KS5 and Head of the Science Department at The British School of Almería, which she joined in September 2019. She teaches Science and Chemistry to IGCSE and International A Level students and is also a member of the Safeguarding Team. A trained analytical chemist and graduate of the University of Bristol, Elena has over 15 years’ experience across the British and Spanish education systems, teaching a range of subjects including Science, English and Mathematics. As a key pastoral leader, she works closely with tutors and Student Leadership to ensure students feel safe, supported and confident. She also empowers KS5 students to be positive role models and helps foster enthusiasm for learning across the school.
Marie is a French Teacher and Head of Key Stage 3 at The British School of Almería, which she joined in December 2017. Born in France, she holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Arizona State University, where she developed a strong interest in child development and wellbeing. She later completed a Spanish cultural course at the University of Granada and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education International (PGCEi) with the University of Nottingham. Her professional journey reflects her deep commitment to student wellbeing, pastoral care and inclusive education.
At BSA, we foster a safe environment where students’ wellbeing and protection are our highest priority. Our whole school community - staff, families and providers - shares responsibility for preventing, identifying and responding to any risk, abuse or neglect, guided by clear protocols and ongoing training to ensure every student’s safety and holistic development.
Access control
All visitors must register at reception and be authorised before entering, ensuring that only approved individuals can access the school grounds.
Security cameras
Cameras are positioned in key areas to monitor communal spaces, strengthen security and support a swift response in the event of an incident.
Active supervision
Students are supervised by school staff during breaks, lesson transitions, lunch and extracurricular activities to help ensure a safe, orderly environment.
Emergency protocols
Our school has up-to-date emergency protocols, regularly reviewed and practised with students and staff to ensure a swift, effective response.
Digital protection
Internet access is filtered through Smoothwall and other safe browsing tools, supported by clear policies for responsible device use.
Staff training
All teaching and non-teaching staff receive ongoing training in child welfare and safeguarding to identify and address concerns professionally.
Counseling and psychology
A specialist team provides emotional support and follow-up for students who need it, helping to identify difficulties and promote wellbeing.
